Charles Koch is an American businessman and philanthropist who co-owns and serves as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Koch Industries. Their father, Fred Koch, who founded the company in 1940, left the business to Charles and his younger brother David.

The brothers, particularly Charles, were instrumental in expanding and growing the business into one of the largest privately held companies in the United States. Charles, one of four sons born into a family of industrialists, was intelligent and hardworking from an early age.

Charles Koch was born in Wichita, Kansas, on November 1, 1935, to Mary and Fred Chase Koch. His father was an industrialist-turned-engineer who founded what would become Koch Industries. The three brothers of Charles are Frederick, David, and William.

In 1957, he received his Bachelor of Science in general engineering, and in 1958, he received his Master of Science in mechanical engineering. After receiving his degree, he joined Arthur D. Little, Inc. However, he returned to Wichita in 1961 to join his father’s business, Rock Island Oil & Refining Company, and this position lasted only a short time.

In the late 1960s, he was a young man determined to expand the family business, which had become a medium-sized oil company. In 1967, he became president of the company and renamed it Koch Industries in honor of his father. Since then, he has also served as chairman of the board and chief executive officer.
