When ranked by gross premiums written (GPW) in 2020, AXA tops the list of the largest European insurance companies with USD 115.3 billion. The insurer also recorded USD 80 billion of capital & surplus from 2020.

Our list of the biggest insurance companies in Europe also reveals that, of the major four European insurers, only Munich Re and Swiss Re made it into the top ten, according to research data from ratings agency AM Best.

With GPW of USD 67.4 billion and USD 36.7 billion in capital & surplus, Munich Re is in fourth place. Swiss Re, with GPW of USD 42.9 billion and USD 27.1 billion in capital & surplus, ranks in eighth place.

With GPW of USD 20.1 billion, SCOR, one of the other big four European insurers, came in at number 20 on the list. The last of the big four European insurers, Hannover Re, did not appear on the list, though.

Allianz, with a GPW of USD 101.9 billion, is ranked second on the list. The corporation also had the most capital & surplus on the list in 2020, totaling USD 99.2 billion.

Generali, an Italian insurer, came in third with GPW of 82.8 billion USD and capital & surplus of 36.8 billion USD.

Zurich Insurance Group, with USD 50.5 billion in GPW, is ranked one spot below Munich Re. With USD 49.4 billion in GPW, HDI Group is only behind in sixth place.

The list’s seventh spot belongs to Lloyd’s. The top insurance and reinsurance market in the world reported GPW of $48.1 billion and capital & surplus of $45.9 billion in 2020.

In addition, Chubb, with a GPW of USD 41.2 billion, is ranked ninth, just below Swiss Re. The corporation also reported capital & surplus of USD 59.4 billion.

Crédit Agricole Assurances, a French insurer with USD 36.1 billion in GPW, rounds out the top ten.

It’s interesting to note that only two insurers—Allianz and AXA—recorded GPW of above USD 100 billion.
